Reading is such a large portion of the elementary school day. By reading, I mean reading for pleasure! We have an awesome classroom library and some dedicated readers. Most of the time, my students just want to read in school. They've told me it feels more natural to read at school than it does at home. That worries me a bit. I want students to not only read at home, but continue to read at home once they are in middle school, high school, and beyond. I worry that there are many reasons they don't continue to read for pleasure after elementary school, but if I can get comfortable furniture in our classroom to make it feel more relaxed like home, perhaps they will find themselves able to engage in reading at home. Even if I can get one or two students to read more at home, it will be worth it.
