I teach Family and Consumer Science in one of the poorest communities in a parish where almost 25% of the population lives below the poverty level. Many of my students admit that they rarely eat healthy, homemade meals. Ramen “noodles” or “fast food” are the most common responses when I ask them what they ate for supper. Sadly, most of them also report they only sit around the dinner table on holidays. My class gives them the opportunity to learn about nutrition, food/kitchen safety, and basic cooking skills while working with a group of their peers. Once meals are prepared, they must all sit together around a properly set table to enjoy their dishes. Without prompting they often begin complimenting the head cook and talking about their day! The kitchen appliances I am requesting would replace old, damaged, or poor quality ones. Having safe, quality appliances for both kitchen areas will reduce the risk of injury to students and allow for greater productivity during our food labs. The binders will be used to organize all of their Family and Consumer Science notes, handouts, and recipes and will be a resource they can treasure and refer back to for years to come!
