It is my duty as an educator and community member to civically engage my students and to build their collaboration, empathy, and agency so they are able to understand themselves better and the world around them. I would like to expand my classroom library to open the doors for children to examine injustices that exist at the intersections of race, class, and gender. I want my students to have access to rich, multicultural literature that promotes authors and characters of races other than white. I want to cultivate positive identity formation, encourage students to confront racial and ethnic injustice, and prepare them to live and work together in a diverse world. To do this, the conversation about race needs to start early and keep happening; the books that I will use are critical in helping my students on their journey. I plan on using The Black Lives Matter movement guiding principals to spark critical reflection and honest conversations in my classroom as a way for my students to engage with critical issues of social justice.
