The students that I teach have never played an instrument before, know little about music, and don't own guitars. By the end of the one semester class they can perform entire songs by themselves or with others, can perform for an audience, and have the tools necessary to become lifelong guitar players. The students all learn the basics of how to form chord shapes and apply them to simple songs. After a few weeks, they are then able to select songs that they want to learn to perform for the class. I give them class time to practice their songs while I go around and help them individually. They also get to learn songs to play together, sometimes in duos or trios and enjoy playing them for the rest of the class.
