My percussion students are learning new material that requires the use of special percussion instruments such as the vibraslap, ratchet, cowbell, triangle, crash cymbals, and more. They are also eager to learn new playing techniques and more complex rhythms on the bass drum and snare drum. These instruments will help them make connections to sounds they've heard in various genres of music, cartoons, movies, radio, and apply them to the music they play in class. Percussionists have a huge responsibility to any musical ensemble because they provide the beat and the musical details that make a piece interesting or powerful. I want my students to experience the joy of playing many different percussive instruments and learn how to operate as a percussion section.
