My students will be analyzing the importance of diverse representation in literature. Despite best efforts, many schools still do not have a curriculum that is inclusive of authors from different cultures. Through these lit circles, my students will be guiding themselves in discussions about the text. These novels will allow students to explore the necessity of proper representation while engaging them in formal peer discussions about the text. Requested titles include When I Was the Greatest, Panic, How It Went Down, You Don't Even Know Me Stories and Poems About Boys, Tears Of A Tiger, and Flying Lessons & Other Stories. In a PBL environment, students will then address the lack of representation in local school districts by crafting letters and presentations to local school boards. My students will be given autonomy to craft their own projects to advocate for themselves and their cultures in a local, public setting. These texts will provide enriching literature experiences to highlight representation and give my students a guide to begin their experience with project-based learning.
