Our school uses the Lucy Calkins model of readers/writers workshop. The biggest catch of workshop model is to teach our state standards in congruence with giving students choice in their reading. This is where the project comes in! In order for students to have authentic learning experiences they need to buy in to what they are reading, and in order for them to buy into books they need to be able to see themselves in the characters; and most importantly, they need to be able to connect with ideas and issues being portrayed in their novels. With this project, you will be helping my students find a passion for reading. I myself was not a reader until the 8th grade. I thought reading was so boring, but then I discovered Jodi Picoult and my love for reading began. I am a firm believer that there is a book out there for everyone. I pride myself on being able to find a great book for ANY student. I have about 200 books of my own in my classroom. I would have each wall covered with books if I could, but realistically, I am only one person and books can be expensive! I believe it is my responsibility to read as many titles and genres as I can so I can help my students find the perfect book. With your help we will be able to give these kids the adventure they deserve!
