All children should be prepared to think deeply and to think well so they have the chance to become the innovators, educators, researchers, and leaders who can solve the most pressing challenges facing our nation and our world, both today and tomorrow. But, right now, not enough of our youth have access to quality STEM learning opportunities and too few students see these disciplines as springboards for their careers. Students from impoverished areas generally have not met STEM professionals, or do not know about STEM careers. Living in a rural, low income community, it is even more critical that students be exposed and encouraged to think outside the box and be creative. STEM is not only a great way to close the academic achievement gap between low income and high income areas, it also improves cooperation, communication, and other 21st century skills in students. All students learn differently and hands-on, student led learning has been proven to work best in my classroom. The different blocks, such as the magnetic blocks, keva blocks, brain flakes, and other materials, will allow students that time to work with others and really let their creativity show. Not only will they have time to free build, they will have task cards and specific structures to build to ignite creativity.
