Our students are very hands-on! They have shown a special interest in building, STEM activities, and some of our students use manipulatives as a means of reinforcement. For instance, our students with Autism use various classroom materials as reinforcement for good behavior and for short breaks as needed throughout the day. We have found that is is a more positive approach and they can take ownership of their learning. Our other students use manipulatives as well for different learning tasks, center work, or for hands-on STEM activities. They use the manipulatives to help them think, create, organize and record their ideas. The manipulatives help them with their communication skills too. In our classroom, we know that all students learn in their own special way, just like each child is unique in their own way. We feel that instruction should be tailored to every type of learner so that all students have the equal right to a proper, effective, and FUN education! With the addition of more manipulatives into our classroom, we will be able to increase our use of more hands-on learning!
