Not everyone has the benefit of an idyllic home life. Most of us need tools to build our own self-concept so that we can succeed, no matter what the circumstances. In my class, students write about the challenges that they face as individuals, in their community, and in society. We share stories of personal victories to inspire others to overcome, to move forward, and to reach higher goals. The magazine "Choices" and novel Ungifted will teach my students that resiliency, responsibility, and self-respect can chart the course for a successful future. I want my students to know that being self-reliant is the greatest freedom afforded to us by living in the United States. When we take care of our social and emotional needs, strive for excellence in education, there is nothing that can hold us back.
