A classroom with flexible seating provides students with the opportunity to focus better and be their best selves, academically. Giving students the ability to choose their preferred seating has less to do with the furniture itself; in reality, giving students a choice empowers them, while imbuing them with the responsibility of determining their ideal conditions for working productively--something we do as adults. It utilizes student voice, creates buy in, and increases collaboration among students. If students feel comfortable in and can own their space, then they are more likely to own their learning. Offering students choice about their seating helps them to feel and be more in control of their classroom. This sense of empowerment leads them to working collaboratively and creating and achieving in ways they can connect to and be proud of. A classroom with flexible seating encourages higher-order thinking skills such as problem solving, conflict resolution, and emotional skills. These are skills that are absolutely essential, but sadly, skills that are diminishing in a world that offers instant--and constant--gratification.
