The majority of my students are people of color. It is vital that they read literature with characters who they can relate to. One of the most important parts of learning is to feel connected to the material you are learning about. When a student identifies with a character's background, they want to learn more, read more, and discuss more. I want them also to learn about young people who are different than them. Whether it is a character who is blind or who is an immigrant, I want them to recognize that as humans we all have things that we share. We all have hopes, dreams, and struggles. Literature is an excellent way for students to understand other people's experiences.
