A Long Walk to Water is a challenging tale of survival, perseverance, and success. Our students spend a lot of time reading informational nonfiction and it would be helpful for them to dip their toes into literary nonfiction. This text helps us to effectively target standards concerning analysis of theme and character development in relation to plot and author's craft. When students are able to see different walks of life, these experiences inform their perspectives and broaden their views for the better. Being able to read A Long Walk to Water allows Salva Dut's life story of survival and activism to take hold and push students toward a better understanding of the world and their own lives.
