My students are runners. When confronted with a challenge, their fight or flight reactors tell them to flee. This has led to children running out of school and disappearing into the city. I know I don't need to explain why that is problematic. By creating a comfortable, safe, and soothing environment, my students will seek out my classroom when they are upset, where we can work through their problems, rather than run from them. The couch is essential. A couch says "Let's sit and chat" rather than "Sit at your desk. You are in trouble". It's warm and inviting. The bean bag chairs are a cozy and fun alternative to traditional desks. "Hiding" in the open tent will create the illusion of separation while the student calms down. The various sensory items will provide visual as well as hands on soothing for my students.
