The nature of science (how science works) is often misunderstood by the general population. Students often see science as a list of facts- not a thinking process. We are living in an increasingly technological age where information- both good and bad, accurate and inaccurate- are available in an instant. Viewing the world with a skeptical eye is a characteristic that helps prevent being taken advantage of by others. Critical thinking and fact-based decision making are important in today's society. Students need to know how science is different than other ways of thinking - requiring evidence, peer review, and skepticism. My plan is to have students read and discuss Carl Sagan's book "The Demon-Haunted World" to gain insight into the process of science.
