Magnetic whiteboard easels will enhance student collaboration and engagement in my math classes. This school year my class sizes will be quite large. With approximately 30 seventh graders in each of my three math classes and a math remediation course of over 25 students, it will be a little more difficult to create a collaborative community and instill a growth mindset where we learn from each others thinking and mistakes. Students in my classroom are always placed in collaborative, mixed ability groupings of 4 or 5 students. In the past, they have worked on large sheets of poster paper to think through and share their ideas around in-depth math tasks. However, the poster paper has its limitations. For example, some students are looking at student work upside down while others are unable to participate due to space limitations. By providing each student group with their own easel, I feel I will increase engagement and participation. I also feel the easels will allow for more sharing and collaboration between groups because the student work will be more visible to the rest of the classroom. Students often share their groups thinking with their classmates and the easels will aid in the presentation portions of the class. I am also excited to use magnetic manipulatives, such as algebra tiles, to enhance student learning.
