I currently teach 29 fourth grade students in an economically disadvantaged school where parents face home foreclosures and unemployment. Parents find it difficult to purchase books when the primary needs of their family is not being met. Our school also faces financial difficulties which has resulted in numerous layoffs and budget cuts which includes supplemental materials and resources. However, my students are very energetic and eager to learn more about real life personalities as well as the rhythm and rhyme of poetry. Additional, books with Cd's along with the poetry books and journals will assist in increasing their comprehension which in turn will increase their scores on the State Standardized Test.
