As a reading intervention specialist, I am always looking for ways to increase the amount of time my students spend reading independently. This project will allow me to create book backpacks. Each backpack will hold one story book and one stuffed plush character from the story. (There are even a few backpacks with some of our favorite characters on them such as Eric Carle's Hungry Caterpillar and Mo Willems' Elephant.) These backpacks will be borrowed over the weekends to read at home. By creating these book bags with plush characters along with books, my students will be even more excited to read with a friend in hand! These bags will not only increase their motivation, but their reading skills will improve with the extra practice at home. And as they fall in love with these characters, they will be interested in looking for more books within the series.
