We work hard in our room to build relationships and community, and as we all come from very diverse places, it is very important that young children see themselves (and others) in and through books. Picture books such as "Last Stop on Market Street" and "We Are Family" and the many other books on our list will help us see ourselves and better understand those who are different from us. Books are useful in connecting children to experiences they do not understand as well as connecting them to experiences they have already had. Hopefully, making these connections through books will build a fascination and love for reading and help our young readers empathize with others.
