The students in my classroom are special education students in the second and third grade. My students struggle with reading. Some of my students are unable to read books because they are significantly below grade level, by two or more grade levels. A listening center will allow my students to enjoy literature from a wide variety of genres. Hearing a book read on tape will help the students focus on the sounds of the words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. Students are able to build on their vocabulary and start to understand inflection, expression, and dialogue. They will also gain oral fluency as they make connections to what they hear and see throughout the text. The listening center will also provide a quiet space in the classroom where they can practice their reading in a low-stress environment. My students want to learn to read. A listening center will decrease their frustration and add enjoyment to their reading experience.
