My 4th graders are beginning to read to learn, rather than learn to read. Reading is the most important skills they will develop at this age that will support them as life long learners. I am requesting a class set of "Esperanza Rising" and other curricular materials to encourage this skill. With a book in their hand, my students will share an experience of resilience and love for family as they rise with Esperanza. My students will learn, through Esperanza, the fortitude of a migrant family. Many of my students will be able to relate to this experience, as Hurricane Florence resulted in several of my students being displaced.
