We accidentally introduced flexible seating in my room, when they asked me for the choice to sit on the floor with clipboards. They really were the ones who had the idea of flexible seating, if I'm being honest. I began to see half of my classroom choose this option. The results I saw were incredible, especially in students who had been really struggling at the beginning of the year. Such a simple change created so much positivity in our room. We began to implement a few other options as well. Most importantly, this gave my students a VOICE in how they wanted to learn. Something that I am passionate about when it comes to education.
I saw that this method really helped each student learn in the way that suited them best and helped them focus. They felt as if this was a home to them, which made learning easy and REALLY FUN! They looked forward to choosing how they would have to sit for the next 8 hours. So many of them arrive at 7:30 am and must stay until 4 or 5 in the afternoon for childcare while their parents work. My students were able to really flourish and do their best work because of this.
I hope to include these materials so my students can continue to have their own voice in their education, even as young as 1st grade! They know when they come to school they don't have to worry because they will feel safe and at ease. This is the type of learning environment I hope can continue to grow in our classroom. I hope you can help our small classroom feel even more like a home to these amazing young minds.
