We strongly believe in the concept that books should provide "windows and mirrors." As the great Rudine Sims Bishop once wrote, "When children cannot find themselves reflected in the books they read, or when the images they see are distorted, negative, or laughable, they learn a powerful lesson about how they are devalued in the society of which they are a part.” My co-teacher and I hope to give our students the best that the world of books has to offer. To our thinking, that means providing an array of engaging books that reflect the diversity of our classroom, our nation, and our world. Just as our students deserve to see people like themselves reflected in the books we read, their reading lives will also be enriched by a library that spans many reading levels and subject areas. We thank you for your generosity in creating a classroom library that will surely support a lifelong love of reading.
