Books can ignite a child's imagination. My students may be 12-14 year olds, but coming from low-income families means they have responsibilities of young adults outside of school. In school, they don't have much time to read freely on what their interests are due to Standards and time commitments for lessons. When they are in my class, I want them to have the chance to be a kid and explore their imagination using books. Every day we will read at the beginning of class. The books need to have diverse narratives and thought-provoking topics. My students deserve a narrative they can relate to. We need a classroom library to allow for each student in each class (of 30) to have an option to read.
