With a lot of emphasis being placed on children being able to read independently for a long period of time, I feel the need to provide them with as many resources as possible to help them grow as readers. The Hear Myself Sound Phones is one of those resources. Many times during Reader's Workshop, I am conferring and working with just 4 to 5 students at a time, leaving the other 15 students to read on their own. With the use of our "phones", students can improve their reading fluency, improve their reading expression, help them self correct mistakes while they are reading and have also been proven to be a GREAT resource for many ESL learners! With the help of the various strategies and skills I have taught them, the phones will allow my students to be responsible for their reading time. I also feel this is another way to help them begin to develop into the independent learners we try to help them become.
