My students need boogie boards (writable tablets that erase), white boards, and other materials they can use to practice showing their work in different subjects. Practicing computation of multiplication and division problems, or drawing a simple graphic organizer to practice inferring words is so much more effective when it can be done with some of these materials!
My 4th graders currently use very small and worn out white boards with partners to practice many skills before they are asked to demonstrate their learning independently. I find this to be very effective because it allows students as much time as they need to practice with a friend, and with their teachers support before they are expected to complete the task on their own.
I also emphasize taking risks and making mistakes for my fourth graders. These tools are perfect for that because they have the ability to erase and start over whenever they want. Its all about the practice, and making the learning visible to me so I can meet their learning needs!
