I was -- and still am -- the student who leaned back in his chair. It isn't out of boredom or reckless defiance, but because I know that I am in a better state of learning and listening when my body feels engaged. If I need this, why should I expect anything different from a room of students all sitting in plastic chairs?
We provide all of this technology to students, but fail to engage them in physical ways that we know contribute to a more effective learning environment. Sitting on a stool engages the core, which is not only a healthier alternative to sitting in a chair, but it also provides sensory input and fun for the students. Students should be comfortable in class, and I want them to see the stools as opportunities to 1) take initiative in their learning and 2) move around the room to collaborate with their peers.
The Learniture Active Learning Stool, while expensive, is sturdy and inviting. Its adjustable height lets students sit in the ways that feel most comfortable. Last year, I discovered what a classroom looks like when we fail to meet the needs of students who desire the sensory engagement of flexible seating.
Students deserve more.
