Calculators, when used properly, can be a huge benefit in the classroom. As a teacher, I believe math problems should first be solved without the use of a calculator. After the problem is completed, I give my children the option to use the calculator to check their work. This way, they are involved in the "whole process" of completing a problem from start to finish. For some children, math does not come easy and they struggle in areas that other children do not. In this case, the calculator relieves some of that stress and tension for that child. We do not all learn in the same way. Some of us are visual learners, some auditory, and some of us are hands on learners. As my children grow and reach the next levels of mathematics, calculators will be needed. I think it is important at this age to introduce them to how they can be used in a beneficial way without relying on them.
