I believe that flexible seating can change a classroom. Giving students the responsibility of choosing where they want to work is one way that I help them become independent learners and thinkers. I strive to create a welcoming classroom environment for all of my students. I want my third graders to be proud of their classroom and excited to learn in this space. These items will make my classroom a developmentally appropriate learning zone that meets the needs of all of my students. Students will be given the option to stand, sit at a high table with stools, sit at traditional desks, sit on the floor, on stability balls, crate seats, or at a table with chairs that allow them to bounce their feet as they work. And that is just the tables! During independent work time, students are free to grab a clipboard and spread out on the floor, sit in our cozy library, or at a number of fun spots in our classroom. It is incredibly important that the stability balls be anchored in a chair to keep all of the students in my classroom safe. I have found that my students consistently make positive and successful choices about where to sit and who to sit with. Flexible seating teaches them life skills about being independent and successful. I am so lucky that no two students in my classroom are the same. If they are not the same, I should not expect them to be successful with the same materials. Thank you for helping me meet the needs of the variety of learners in my third grade class.
