The books chosen are stories that help explain to students what emotions are and that it's okay to have them, as well as stories about how to be a good friend, how to treat others, and how to cope with their different emotions. My students need the extra support and lessons on social interactions and skills. These are not skills they are taught at home.
Students also need flexible seating so that they are able to take control of their learning and help improve their overall academics because they are better able to focus. Studies have shown that flexible seating helps students to make decisions to best fit their needs as far as being able to focus. As a first grade teacher, I do not expect my students to be able to sit still for extended periods of time while doing a lesson. I myself am constantly walking around the room and moving.
The rest of the supplies are materials such as glue sticks and tape that my students need in order to be successful because their families are not able to provide these supplies for them. These children come from the lowest poverty neighborhoods in the area, they do not have the best home lives, and they are just not able to get all of the supplies they truly need.
