The main goal of the project is to get students to explore key concepts in gravity, spectrometry, and planetary science in science class using this lab equipment that will time the acceleration of an object as it drops, spectrographs that can better show the unique spectrum of several common chemicals, and to be able to actually see the planets, moons and other objects through the telescope rather than just relying on pictures from a book or website. Such experiences will create lasting impressions of the wonders of science around them. Timing the acceleration of an object as it drops with just stopwatches in unison is very difficult for students this age. These better spectroscopes will be used to study elements in stars, and the telescope will provide the first ever opportunity for most of our students to look in it and see the wonders in space.
