I want my 9th grade students to experience the award-winning YA novel, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie. This book is a fun, biographical exploration of a teenage boy's life growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation, and is a relevant way to explore other cultures, as well as the endless possibilities of writing and storytelling. This book not only provides humor and life experiences that reaches students on a more personal level, but it also nullifies the common misconception that non-fiction writing is boring.
