There has been a lot of research showing the benefits of flexible seating. As mentioned before, all students are different and that means all students have a different way of learning and that does not always mean the way they read or write. Some students simply cannot sit at a desk all day long, and many adults can relate to that feeling. There are some people who struggle with sitting in a stationary seat in front of desk all day long, some of us much rather sit on the floor, stand up, sit in a comfy seat. This same feeling is one that our students have, the difference being that they are younger and still learning what works best for them. Flexible seating as a number of great benefits. First, by having different seating options you are able to provide students with a choice, which doesn't happen often for students. Students are able to feel empowered know they can ask for a seat that will work best for them that day.Next, students need to move! Remember when you were seven or eight years old and how hard it was to sit still, students have energy that they want to use and flexible seating allows them to move around in the classroom without causing a major disruption. Flexible seating, especially the table, can provide a sense a community and collaboration because the students at the table have similar interest and needs that help come together and learn as a group. It is also a lot of fun for student to get the chance to sit on a folding chair or sit on the floor instead of a desk for a change. Finally, flexible seating provides a sensory input that so many students need to feel successful throughout the day.
