Each morning my students begin their day with a team-building task. The building blocks, water beads, magnetic blocks, and connecting blocks will be used in small groups to creatively work together to design individual pieces. The use of STEM toys is almost a daily activity in my classroom, especially in the morning. Using a team-building model to begin our day, students are assigned to 8 different groups. Each group using a bucket of materials to create first thing in the morning. The STEM toys allow the students to use their imagination to create and build before we start our day. The challenge comes in when I do not have enough supplies for all students to be creative. Having to wait your turn or only having a small amount of items to work with can be frustrating for my students. By having these new STEM toys to use, student engagement will increase and creativity and imagination will soar!
These materials will allow all children in my class to feel successful because there is no correct way to use these different products. Starting the day feeling successful will lead to a positive attitude and an eagerness to try more difficult tasks throughout the day. It is important to me, that my students have a positive outlook on school so they will continue to be successful.
