My fourth grade students attend a rural school in West Virginia. They are eager to work in cooperative groups and to experience tables rather than desks. This new type of learning experience requires some adjustments to what they are used to when it comes to organization of their materials. My students currently keep their pencils, crayons, markers, scissors, and rulers in a basket in the center of the table. Their chapter books, which they enjoy reading often, as well as their workbooks, and other materials are located on bookshelves around the room. Each time these items are needed a student from each group must get up, gather the items, return to the table, and pass them out to their group. This cuts into valuable instructional time.
