Think about the last time you walked into a coffee shop. The shop is filled with a variety of seating options (i.e. stools, tables, chairs, etc.) to fit the needs of its patrons. The quiet music, perfect lighting, and overall aesthetics of the coffee shop are favorable for a variety of different people. Moreover, if any of these coffee-goers wanted to switch up their seats, they are free to do just that. I love this freedom to choose, and so do my students. I decided that this year would be a year where I let go of my need to control, and let my students have the control they crave. I began researching types of flexible seating options, management strategies, and the benefits associated with incorporating this into my classroom. I was sold. Over the past two years we have ditched the desks in my classroom and incorporated tables. I believe flexible seating is one way to increasingly foster independence and choice in my classroom. The purpose of this grant is to purchase Wobble chairs and soft rockers for my students that will continue to provide options for students to grow problem solving skills while increasing engagement, motivation, and overall learning targets. I want my students to have the flexibility to enter my classroom and learn what works best for them. Students at this age need to be given the ability to make choices for themselves to become problem-solvers in society. They need to learn that struggle is something to be valued; a lesson that grows them. Through ditching the desks (and chairs!), I hope to accomplish this sense of growth in each of my students.
