My fifth-grade students are required to take the state writing test in the spring of each year. This test is administered through the computer and students are required to type their essays. In my classroom they start in August learning to type correctly and incorporate the writing skills needed to complete this evaluation. They learn various forms of essays, poems, letters, and advertisements that we display proudly in our hallways. My goal is to help and support my students to become the best writers they can be. The pandemic has caused so many obstacles for these students and my goal of teaching them to become proficient writers requires much more typing, editing, and printing than in past years. They need to see their printed work, then edit this work, and correct it on their computers. In addition, they produce colorful PowerPoints and presentations that require me to print from another location for them to be full color. I would like to have a high-quality color printer in my classroom that will allow my students to print their work as they complete it. Currently they must email their work to me, and I must print it from the school printer or take it home and print from my personal printer. This process usually means that we can’t immediately print and edit. With a printer in my classroom that they could send their work directly, which will mean more time to work on skills, editing, and publishing. If this publishing station is funded, my students will be given the opportunity to print, edit, and publish their work in a timely fashion. This will allow them to have more opportunities for success in writing.
