During the 2018-2019 school year, I set out to establish book clubs with my middle school students. I held a book tasting in which interested students came in small groups to a central location to "taste" and select a book to read. I asked teachers and administrators to help by hosting a book club once a week, during students' lunch periods. We had a tremendous response to our first round of book clubs! Students would see me in the halls and beg for another round. Students would come and find me in the school just to ask what books I was reading on my own. We began to create a culture of reading and discussing literature. Students began to see that there are books out there that are relevant to their own experiences. They began connecting with characters in ways that they can't connect with others. I saw a shift in our middle school students and look forward to continuing to build this culture during the 2019-2020 school year! These books will go directly into the hands of my young middle school readers to continue our Lunch Bunch Book Clubs.
