Students in my classroom engage with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) as an anchor text for our yearlong learning expedition. After studying the creation of the UDHR we examine a dystopian community of the future in "The Giver" by Lois Lowry where the rights of citizens are repeatedly violated in their quest for perfection and "sameness." Students in my classroom are active readers who are expected to annotate texts as they read to prepare for class discussions and Socratic seminars. By having their own copy of "The Giver" to underline, highlight, and make notes in the margins, students will have a tool that will dramatically improve their reading experience.
