These journals will allow my students to have their own personal space to write and record what’s happening in the lab. They will use them in my STEM lab to record results, draw pictorial interpretations, create prototypes, make discoveries, and generally have a live record of their lab activities. With so many electronic technologies in the children’s hands, pen to paper writing has almost become a thing of the past. Don’t get me wrong, I love my iPad and Galaxy phone, but I still enjoy just writing things down. I believe that solutions to math problems are more accurate when written down. Writing down your feelings about problems or situations can help you work them out. My students having journals or notebooks to write their predictions or results of an experiment will provide them opportunities to share what they know. I would love for my kiddos to have journals starting on the first day they enter the lab. There will be times that we have activities that do not REQUIRE the notebook, but I want them to know that it’s there if they need it. Students who write are students who read with understanding. My kids will hopefully be able to transfer what they learn in my class and vice versa.
