I am the Digital Teacher Librarian at a middle school in the San Antonio area that has mainly minority students who are both at-risk and below the poverty line. Even though our students 100% qualify for free lunches, there is a need to purchase culturally relevant text and materials. The makeup of this school is about 54% Hispanic and 46% Black. My desire is for students to see a fair and honest representation of themselves in what they read. I want them to discover new authors and illustrators who look like them and have a shared experience. I want these books for my middle-schoolers because representation matters.
