Having my students share in the reading of a chapter book together as a class will promote and foster a strong classroom community the first weeks of school. It will also motivate any reluctant or struggling readers or those with a lack of motivation to read to want to be a part of this experience with everyone. Judy Blume is an outstanding author and I know the kids would relate to the story as it is being told from the eyes of a fellow fourth-grader. The students will learn the genre of fiction and participate in whole class discussions. Students will be able to describe, in depth, a character, setting or event in the book. The students will also be able strengthen their vocabulary, analyze character traits, identify story elements, and draw conclusions. This is the perfect shared experience to set the tone for the beginning of the school year, as we build our classroom community.
