We follow a workshop model in every subject area in my school which promotes small group interaction and discourse for rigorous learning. I have found that elementary school students in this setting learn best when not confined to a desk. This often results in my students sitting on the tiled floor with a clipboard to complete assignments with their group. By providing students with work surfaces such as the surf chairs or wobble cushions, I believe the students will be more successful, since they will be more comfortable as they sit in small groups. Last year I made some seat cushions and found my students gravitated to them as a preferred location for small group work. However, I did not have enough for the entire class, and since not every student learns the same way, a cushion may not be the best option for some students. Wanting every child to feel welcome and accepted to learn in the way that they need, having an array of flexible seating options will promote the success and growth that I encourage and expect from every student in my class. In addition, I am asking for student magazine subscriptions to "TIME for Kids". These magazines will provide enrichment opportunities across the curriculum because they align with our science, social studies and language arts standards. Students will have an opportunity to apply fourth grade concepts as they explore real world events. I use these magazines as an opportunity for meaningful discourse among students as they enjoy developmentally appropriate and exciting pieces of non-fiction reading material that they can then bring home and share with families.
