My students have been greatly impacted by the Lawrence Gas Fires. Due to these gas fires many of my students have been displaced and organization has been a big downfall for them due to all of these circumstances. Students have been living in many different areas moving from shelters, to family homes, to hotels and trailers. This has led to much of their work being lost and also things are easily forgotten because, there is so much going on at home that homework has unfortunately not become the priority when you are trying to figure out how you are going to get to school the next day while you are displaced. Students have expressed concern that they can't remember when things are due or what they need to do on that day and homework is so crucial to their every day learning. Students need this organizational tool, Agendas, to be able to move up successfully into high school and to excel in future careers. Classwork and homework are 50% of their grade in my class. When students miss a class they need to make up the classwork and homework. Due to the displacements many students have been missing school due to the lack of transportation. This means that the amount of missing classwork and homework has been on the rise. This is problematic not only for their learning, but for their grades especially when they want to get into really amazing private and vocational high schools that are specifically looking at their grades. Students will be able to organize not only their school work, but their home lives and would benefit highly from learning this skill early on.
