Did you know that most picture books are filled with characters that are either animals of white children/families? In the past, most of my students have been African American or Hispanic. With that being said, they should be able to relate to the stories that are being told by seeing themselves in books. While our eyes see so much diversity in our schools, our classroom libraries are not nearly as diverse as they should be. Students from all backgrounds should be able to relate to books whether that be based on a characters looks, family dynamic, or culture. My hope is that by adding these books into our classroom, my students will be able to create deeper love and connection with books.
