There is no greater feeling as an educator than being in a classroom where students are engaged, happy, and peaceful. Where their voices are buzzing with ideas, their eyes wide, their bodies comfortable, and their hearts happy. In our third grade class, students are encouraged to make responsible choices in where they complete both their independent and group learning. Some students are most comfortable standing at our high top table. Others are more comfortable leaning against the wall with a clip board. Flexible seating in the classroom allows students to engage, collaborate, and be empowered by having a choice in their learning environment. By taking ownership in where and how they learn, students will feel both physically and emotionally comfortable and safe in their classroom environment. This year, I hope to expand their options for seating even further. The yoga mats, seat cushions, and area rug will provide more opportunity for students in flexible and responsible seating. I am looking forward to watching the students evolve as decision makers, problem solvers, and independent thinkers, all while feeling secure, safe, and happy!
