My students live in a high crime and low socioeconomic area. They encounter drugs, violence, and gangs outside of school. 95% of the students are on the free lunch program and 60% are learning English as a second language. They attend a middle school that serves a safe haven for their rough neighborhood. They are excited to be in class and enjoy science. They come to the class with an eagerness that is like nothing i have ever seen. They enjoy doing hands-on activities and seeing the practical applications of what they are learning.
