Earth’s climate is a solar energy-powered system. Every year, our planet receives approximately 1,361 watts of solar energy per square meter (kW/m²) at the top of its atmosphere. That energy reaches Earth in the form of shortwave solar radiation, entering our atmosphere as UV rays and visible sunlight. Some of that sunlight – about 29% – is reflected back out to space by ice and snow on the Earth’s surface, its cloud cover and the atmosphere. The remaining solar energy heats Earth’s surface, powers ocean currents, drives the hydrologic cycle and circulation of the atmosphere. We have become smarter about using the natural energy that surrounds us. My students will investigate how to use alternative forms of energy such as solar, wind, and water to generate electrical energy for everyday use. My students will learn about the transformation of different types of energies by assembling their own LED circuits using the solar panels and rechargeable batteries. Every year our science department holds an Earth Day Event. Our students create all types of environmental energy projects for exhibition to our school community. This solar lights project will be a great moment for my students to shine brightly!
