The materials I have requested will help my students solve problems using STEAM. STEAM is Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. For example, I have requested LEGOs, LEGO boards, and marbles. With these materials, my students will be able to create marble race mazes. They can make these as complex as they can, to try and "stump" their partners with the marble run. Another activity will be using tongue depressors and clothespins to build different structures. Students will try and engineer with their group mates the tallest structure they can. “By one estimate, 65 percent of children entering grade school this year will end up working in careers that haven’t even been invented yet.”-- Cathy Davidson professor at Duke University. My students who come from high poverty homes need all the experience with STEAM materials they can get, since they may not have access to them at home. Giving my students experiences with STEAM materials will help them develop the curiosity and creativity needed for any job in the future.
