My students will use all of these resources on a daily basis each morning. We have thrown out the traditional pen and paper morning work in order to promote the imagination of our students. Our kindergarten students get their hands dirty with these building kits each day, and the growth in their imagination is incredible. Kindergarten is all about figuring out the world through exploration with their hands. Currently, my classroom has large wooden building blocks, smaller foam blocks, plastic interlocking pieces, and a gear kit to use their imagination with. However, with 20 students those resources do not go far, and these materials also double as inside recess toys. This makes these materials overused. I plan to use the kits from this project as STEM morning work only. This leaves these materials as special for that time only. We need park engineering kits, a suspension game, snowflake building blocks, and a building bar kit. The students will come into my room, and, after preparing their classroom materials for the day, they will go to a STEM morning work station until class begins. This concept eliminates students struggling to finish morning work due to circumstances outside of their control. STEM morning work stations create a community among my students and promote social skills. By starting the morning off with such a creative activity, my students are more excited to learn.
